Position Summary:
The Recreation and Facility Technician is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of various Town of White City facilities. This includes janitorial duties, minor building repairs, equipment maintenance, and grounds upkeep. The role also involves event setup and coordination for Town events and programs, including arranging tables, chairs, and stages.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facility Maintenance and Janitorial Services: Provide regular cleaning and caretaking for municipal buildings and facilities, ensuring high cleanliness and hygiene standards.
  • Equipment Monitoring and Maintenance: Regularly monitor and maintain equipment such as boilers, furnaces, hot water heaters, and air handling units. Report any issues to the supervisor for timely repairs.
  • Minor Building Repairs: Perform routine repairs in plumbing, electrical, and structural systems, ensuring building systems are in optimal condition.
  • Facility Security and Maintenance: Ensure the assigned facilities and offices are maintained, secure, and well-organized.
  • Event Setup and Coordination: Set up and break down event spaces for Town events and programs, including arranging tables, chairs, and stages as per event specifications.
  • Chemical Safety: Handle, store, and apply chemical cleaning agents safely, in accordance with health and safety regulations.
  • Service Requests: Respond to service requests including room setups, furniture moves, and receiving deliveries for various facilities.
  • Documentation and Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate records for facility maintenance, including cleaning schedules, equipment usage, and shift activities.
  • Boiler Maintenance: Conduct low-pressure boiler checks in compliance with Saskatchewan Boiler Act and regulations.
  • Grounds Maintenance: Perform general grounds maintenance, including grass cutting, litter collection, weed whacking, sweeping, and snow removal, to maintain clean and safe outdoor spaces.
  • Inventory Management: Ensure proper management and stocking of cleaning and maintenance equipment and supplies.
  • Security and Safety: Adhere to security protocols and ensure facilities are maintained in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Follow Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Act guidelines to ensure the safety of all individuals.
  • Miscellaneous Duties: Perform other related tasks and duties as needed, contributing to the overall upkeep and safety of facilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Janitorial Expertise: Strong knowledge of janitorial and caretaking practices to perform tasks efficiently and effectively.
  • Facility Maintenance Skills: Ability to carry out minor repairs and general upkeep to maintain building systems and meet community standards.
  • Chemical Safety: Knowledge of safe handling, storage, and application of chemical-based cleaning agents.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of the Saskatchewan Boiler Act and Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Equipment Operation: Proficient in operating maintenance and janitorial equipment, including power washers, floor scrubbers, and vacuums.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with coworkers, municipal staff, elected officials, and the public.
  • Physical Capability: Able to perform physically demanding duties, including lifting, bending, stooping, climbing ladders, and working at heights.
  • Independent Judgment: Ability to prioritize tasks and complete them with minimal supervision, demonstrating sound decision-making, judgment, and problem-solving skills

Education and Experience:

  • Educational Requirements: Completion of Grade 10 or equivalent GED. Preference is given to candidates with prior caretaking or janitorial experience.
  • Certifications and Training: Must pass a criminal record check and may need certification in the operation of one-man lifts and other relevant training.
  • Experience: A minimum of three years’ experience in facility maintenance, custodial work, or a related field is preferred.
  • Driver's License: A valid Class 5 driver’s license and reliable transportation for work-related travel within the Town of White City. Kilometer reimbursement is provided.

Working Conditions:

  • Physical Demands: Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting, standing, walking for extended periods, and occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Certification: Must obtain certification for one-man lift operation (Recreation Facilities).
  • Work Environment: Includes both indoor and outdoor tasks, with exposure to varying seasonal conditions such as snow, rain, and extreme temperatures.
  • Shift Work: The standard work schedule is Monday to Friday, with flexibility required for weekend hours, based on facility needs and special events. Occasional weekend hours and on-call availability may be required.
